You are sitting with a younger relative or friend watching their favorite cartoon. You stop and think about the cartoons you liked to watch when you were little. You always loved watching them, but never thought about how they were made. Through traditional animation, stop-motion animation, computer animation, and CGI, cartoon animation has drastically changed over the years of 1970-2010.
The first animation style ever used and more common back then was cel animation, also known as traditional animation. They start with a hand drawn picture, then the next picture, still hand drawn, is similar to the first but with slight movement. Imagine it as a flipbook style. “It allows some parts of each frame to be repeated from frame to frame, which in turn saves labor,” (Michelsen). Nyman describes the pictures are “traced or copied onto transparent acetate sheets called cels,” and are “placed over a painted background and photographed one by one on a rostrum camera.” This cycle continues until when you rapidly …show more content…

The more complicated animation back then was stop-motion animation. Stop-motion is similar to traditional animation; however, stop-motion is not hand drawn. “It is any animation with the animator physically changing the scenery, take a picture, and continue the cycle to create animation” (Nyman). There are many types of stop-motion animation: clay animation uses figures made out of clay; cutout animation involves moving two-dimensional pieces of material, such as cloth and paper; model animation has animated characters interact with, and become a part of, the real world; and puppet animation involves puppet figures interacting with each other in a constructed environment, in which the puppets have armature inside to keep them still and contrasting them to move at particular joints (Nyman).
