How Has The Shard Changed London's Appearance Radically?

A combination of factors is driving the rush for building the tallest building. With the economic growing, the excessive land prices and the rapidly growth of population, it is important we think about extending existing areas. Tall buildings make a significant impact on the balance of an urban habitat.

The creation of tall buildings into a city results in a huge change within the urban context. For architects, one of the most beautiful creation of tall buildings, is located in the city of London. The Shard, it is considered as London’s new emblem. But, how has The Shard changed London’s appearance radically?

Geographically, London is a huge city, that covers 1,572 squares. London’s skyline has changed radically since the Second World War. If we go back in time to the Roman times, we find that the area where The Shard is located used to be a very poor suburb in the heart of London. During the Second World War bombs destroyed houses, factories, warehouses and this provided a further motivation for rebuilding. The area I am talking about is called Southwark and now, it happens to be one of the most visited and most prestigious area in the London city. Thousands of tourist pass this area everyday and it has become one of the most visited cities in the whole world.
