Prime Examples It is known that each person has someone to look up to in their life. This is also classified as a role model. A perfect example of a character who portrays this behavior in the bestseller, To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee, is Atticus Finch, a father, and a lawyer. He is someone to admire. Atticus is a widower with two children; Jean Louise (“Scout”) and Jeremy Atticus (“Jem"). They all live in Maycomb, Alabama with their cook, Calpurnia. This novel takes place during the Great Depression. Throughout this hard time for Maycomb, Mr. Finch supports his family by operating his law firm. He decides to take on a court case which shapes most of the book. This case is about Tom Robinson, who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus believes he is innocent and continues to fight for him because he has compassion. This is because he constantly provides valuable advice for his daughter and son. He also chooses to defend Tom Robinson even though he is aware that his reputation will be bashed.

One of the main factors is that he is one of the few white citizens of Maycomb who are not racist. The other few that are similar to Atticus in this way, are his children and he is open-minded that they will remain this way. Atticus once stated, “I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through it without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb’s usual disease.” (Lee 100). He is referring to prejudice and racism. Atticus is aware that this “sickness” is challenging to treat.
