This man was a previous slave who wanted to help other former slaves by teaching trades and skills. Washington did not so much fight for rights or equality, but instead asked his followers to just obey a white dominated social structure. Washington was very influential and created a large following.
In what ways did Booker T Washington’s influence shape the economic and social advancement of black southerners, 1880-1920 Booker Taliaferro was born the son of a slave on 5 April 1856 in Franklin County, Virginia. His mother was a cook to plantation owner James Burroughs, while the identity of his father was unknown. Booker worked in the plantations mill, a heavy burden for a small child, and a place where he was sometimes subjected to beatings for not carrying out his work properly. Following the end of the Civil War the family moved to Malden in West Virginia where his mother met and married an African-American freedman – Washington Ferguson.

He rose up the ranks to become an honored guest and a leader in the Southern communities due to his more palatable ideas on race relations, primarily that black people should be thankful for the chance to earn money working in the factory and to not insist on desegregating social areas of society. His focus on the beauty of Southern culture and the romanticization of the relationship between the black man who built society and the white man benefiting along with the promise that black people would be “faithful”, “patient”, and “unresenting” in relation to white people allowed him to increase his class (213). Washington, a former slave, entered his freedom penniless, jobless, and homeless. In 1782, he traveled to Virginia off a very small supply of money. There he hoped to find jobs to sustain his basic needs and raise enough money to enroll in Hampton Institute.
Because of this, Washington was less concerned about political rights and more on promoting the policy of accommodation. In other words, Washington felt that equality could be achieved by appealing to the white Southerner. Washington urged Blacks to accept segregation for the time being and focus on proving their equality through financial independence (Painter, 155). On the contrary, W.E.B Du Bois sharply disagreed with the idea of accommodation.

However Booker T. Washington believed in having a more skillful education, consisting of learning how to trade, mastering agriculture skills and more things one would need to get a job. However, W.E.B DuBois also put many efforts to achieve equal rights towards African Americans which Booker T Washington put on hold. Booker T Washington’s plan was to make it so that “Blacks would [have to] accept segregation and discrimination but their eventual acquisition of wealth and culture would gradually win for them the respect and acceptance of whites”. This vision that Booker T Washington had “practically accepts the alleged inferiority of the Negro race”. W.E.B commented on this process saying it was an attempt, “to educate black boys and girls simply as servants and underlings.”
As you can see,Booker had to overcome disavanges to get an education. Growing up as a slave prevenred him from learning. Booker could not look at the bookks he carried for the girls. For example, on page 6,the text says it was illegal for slaves to read or write. Regaurdless of the obstacles in front of him he never lost the desire to learn.
The Hard Life of a Slave Have you ever thought about the hard life of a slave? Booker T. Washington had to face slavery during the civil war. Booker had many challenges trying to get an education that impacted his life and decisions. In the video “In the time of Booker T. Washington” the object was Booker T. had to go through to get an education during the civil war. A challenge he had to go through was how the rules wouldn 't let him get an education during the civil war.
Booker T. Washington was born a slave and worked as a janitor to get through school. Whereas W.E.B. Du Bois was born in the North and faced very little discrimination, and had an easier time getting into College. They were well educated, and the only difference between them was how they were raised in different environments. Both were on the journey to improve African American’s social and political status in America. However, they had different methods for getting what they wanted.
Regardless of the southern whites who feared that education would give blacks “false notions of equality,” Reconstruction governments began to build a comprehensive public school system. Several black “academies” offered more advanced education and grew into an important network of black colleges and universities. Booker T. Washington was the chief spokesman for the importance of education, having worked his way out of poverty after acquiring an education. He strongly believed in expanding the network of black colleges and institutes since education was vital to the future of their people (Doc 7). Washington urged African Americans to adopt the standards of the white middle class to win the respect of the white population.

Booker T Washington stated in an 1890 article published in the nationally read monthly magazine Christian Union that he had "no hesitancy in asserting that three-fourths of the Baptist ministers and two-thirds of the Methodists are unfit, either mentally or morally, or both, to preach the Gospel to anyone or to attempt to lead anyone." Given his status as an emerging black leader and principal of the Tuskegee Institute gave his comments gravitas, and importantly erased any chance of him being accused of racism. Booker T. Washington is by far one of the brightest and strongest minds from his time. During his Atlanta Exposition address he displays his intellect masterfully. From Mr. Washington’s use of language he was able to seamlessly piece together a speech that we still analyse to this day. Mr. Washington use of rhetoric explains and enlightens the circumstances of freed African Americans trying to fit into communities in the south. From mistreatment and racism still present in the newly freed people.
Frederick Douglas never had a formal education. He spoke of his time as a slave in order to rally the antislavery movement. Booker T. Washington was able acquire an education at Hampton institute by working many jobs to pay for it. He became a teacher; he spoke as a way to raise money and support for the education of African-Americans.
