Over the course of our lives we come and go through many rough obstacles which ultimately define what kind of person we will be for the rest of our life. While reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer many mixed emotions ran through my mind, the main one; what was Chris McCandles? After reading in depth about his family background and amazing adventures I found my answer. Chris McCandles is a dreamer, he is rebellious, and lastly, brave. Dreams are meant to be conquered no matter how impossible they might seem. Chris McCandles had many dreams; to get away from his parents, to never end up like his father, to hitchhike around the US, to start his life over. Living in a household like mine where my family gets along and rarely ever fights it is hard to see myself as ever being “rebellious”, but if I put on Chris’ shoes I can see exactly why he did what he did. Chris wanted nothing to do with his family. He burnt his social security card, destroyed his credit cards, and abandoned his only car, and cut off all communications with every family member. He did not want to be found. Chris was also rebellious by trespassing many roads he should’ve never been on in the first place. He renamed himself as Alexander Supertramp and illegally hopped on trains to get from one place to another. Being as rebellious as he was, Chris McCandles never stole. No matter how hungry or desperate he was he refused to take anything from anyone who offered, even if it was just a small kind gesture. Most kids nowadays hear the word rebellious and automatically think of being rude and disrespectful. Chris was the most respectful man, he impacted so many lives of people he barley knew.
