Do you ever think on what it is like in the military for those with religious beliefs? This is the story of one, Desmond T. Doss and how he was a hero to stand up for what he believed in in the military. Desmond Doss was a hero because he fought in the military without the use of a weapon and went into battle with nothing but a bible and a first aid kit, stood up for what he believed in, and undergo beatings, and cruel tauntings because he wanted to serve his country.
Desmond Doss was born in Virginia and blessed with William and Bertha Doss with two other siblings. Desmond Doss was put through a lot to get to where he got in his life. Desmond was a target not only for his commanders but for the other private soldiers in the US Army, as well. The military saw him as a liability (Berman). Someone being the military and refusing to carry a weapon was a sure thing to get the military in trouble. The commanding officer called Doss into his office and tried to discharge Desmond from the military if he continued to refuse to carry a weapon. Doss told the commanding officer that he didn’t want to kill people he just simply wanted to be a medic and medics don't need a weapon. The military reluctantly let him go into the medical field without a weapon. In the end Desmond Doss was not a liability as they a previously thought. Doss was a hero. Doss undergod beating and curel tauntings all because he wanted to serve his country. When Doss didn’t carry a weapon he was brutally beaten and sent to the medic tent several times. During the first few weeks of camp when he refused to carry a weapon he was spit on, used as a punching bag, and was thrown out of bed and hit with rocks in a pillow and still managed to stay in the military and serve his country. Can you take beatings like that, can you take getting spit on and used like a punching bag? Doss was a hero for not backing down from a challenge and staying in the military.
