In today’s society friendship is still frequent and relevant around the world. Gatsby and Nick’s friendship during the story was very unique from ordinary friendships. Progression was a big factor through each stage of their friendship. Fitzgerald teaches us that friendship represents loyalty. Loyalty allows us to visualize how two individuals will bloom together and how lessons will be learned with one another. Throughout the phases of their friendship it goes about with Gatsby feeling lonely and taking advantage of Nick. The following phase demonstrates how Nick helps Gatsby throughout the friendship, and finally the last phase Nick is being the only one there for Gatsby. Gatsby a lonely man, just trying to find his way back into the heart of a woman he still loves. Desperation would overcome Gatsby to do anything to win her over. Gatsby isolates himself from society. When Nick and Gatsby met, Gatsby wasn’t interested in Nick. Until he found out that Nick was related to Daisy. The discovery made, Gatsby latched onto Nick, and would constantly invite Nick to do things with him. This is partially because Gatsby enjoys Nick’s company, but primarily doesn’t enjoy being alone or desperately needs a distraction from his thoughts. Throughout the book Nick serves to moderate Gatsby from anxiety and illusions. Nick’s admiration for Gatsby allowed him to be a reassurance for Gatsby. Supporting and keeping Gatsby calm allowed Nick to part-take in Gatsby’s life. Not only does Nick know Gatsby is hiding something, but he also believes Gatsby shouldn’t be trusted. Even after feeling a certain way towards Gatsby, he still became loyal to Gatsby and showed us that their relationship is reserved and cordial compared to a usual friendship
