Jay Gatsby was a handsome, rich man who lived in a huge mansion in the Long Island village of West Egg. Gatsby was a dreamer who always envisioned a bigger lifestyle than he grew up on. Gatsby had two main ways of making his income, and that was through an alcohol business and buying several pharmacies. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Gatsby had two American dreams. The first was to be very rich and successful and the second was to be married and have a life with Daisy. While Gatsby did do many illegal and immoral things to get where he was, ultimately he did become extremely rich. Unfortunately the other dream he was not so successful in, in the end he did not win Daisy as he had planned. Gatsby always went after what he wanted, he dreamed a lot about this amazing life he believed he would obtain. He wanted to be rich and successful. He was extremely wealthy and successful, while he might not have done it morally, at the end of the day he did it. He completely distanced himself from the life of poverty he grew up in. Unfortunately for Daisy he was not as successful. He tried forcing her into telling Tom that she never loved him ever, with the idea in mind it would get them to start over. Sadly, you can not erase the past that has already happened, you just can not rewrite history. Gatsby and Tom got into a huge argument where Gatsby lost his cool so Daisy just could not associate with that anymore. She did not recognize Gatsby anymore at that time. Nick states, “She vanished into her rich house into her rich, full life, leaving Gatsby—- nothing. He felt married to her, that was all.” (Fitzgerald 149) This quote is referencing how after the whole conflict happens Daisy completely moves on with her life.
