Nick Tjoelker Mrs. Mitchel English April 16, 2024 Gatsby Essay In the novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses Jordan as a character as a foil to Nick to demonstrate Nick's messiness and his normalness, but in the film Baz Luhrmann's, Fitzgerald uses Jordan more as a plot pusher as she is more of a static character. This is shown in chapter three at one of Gatsby's extravagant parties, where Nick describes chaos and disorder. Even though both the movie and the book may have differences in scenes overall, they both display that Nick is a messy character in different ways. Jordan adds to the messiness of Nick throughout the book, from when they first met, to their last conversation. Jordan and Nick have a small connection, but it's not a desired relationship. It feels almost as if Gatsby and others are under “peer pressure” in their relationship. An example of Jordan adding to the messiness of Nick as a character is chapter 3 where Jordan throws her cigarette onto Nick's desk; this, displays that Jordan's actions can surprise Nick or alter something that Nick is working on. Throughout the book, Jordan's actions tend to fluster Nick, and his friends tend to put him in tricky situations. Like in chapter two when Nick is in the hotel room with Tom and Myrtle. Nick is there with friends and is in an uncomfortable situation because Tom is cheating on his wife Daisy, who is his cousin.
