Lady Macbeth is a vital character in the William Shakespeare play Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is both an evil and manipulative character. She also shows a complete gender role reversal and makes Macbeth a tragic hero. Lady Macbeth understands Macbeth’s character so well that she easily manipulated Macbeth to do exactly as she wanted. Macbeth had found out from three witches that he would inherit the throne of Scotland. Macbeth was a modest man, but Lady Macbeth knew of his true ambitions. Lady Macbeth coaxes Macbeth into thinking that by killing King Duncan, he will become a stronger man. She puts him on his course of evil and wrong-doing. She uses Macbeth, a once noble man, to commit murder. Not just murder, but regicide, killing of a king. She knows that the sons of the king will flee for the hope of remaining alive. She also knows that the only person who would be unopposed to take the place of the king would be Macbeth. This would make her Queen of Scotland. She is a power-hungry monster, which will stop at nothing to get what she wants. “Lady Macbeth is described as ‘fiend- like’ and allies herself with the de-feminized witches or weird sisters by invoking spirits to ‘unsex’ her…” (Findlay 239). Lady Macbeth says for help to “unsex” herself so that she rid herself of feeling to carry out the killing of Duncan. She even says that she would murder her own child to have this chance to become a powerful figure. However, the feelings she tries to get rid of eventually come out. Later in Macbeth, we come to a scene where we see that Lady Macbeth has started to sleep walk and talk. During this scene, she talks about the death of King Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff’s family.
