The modern movie depiction of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth contains a more in depth description of the relationships that surround Macbeth. The movie associates the role that Macbeth played to the role that Hitler played in World War II. The setting of the movie is very easy to identify when the banner of Macbeth is shown hanging behind him in the dining room. This banner is an iconic way to link Macbeth to Hitler. The connection Macbeth has to Hitler also reinforces how Macbeth will function in relationships once he has gained so much power. Relationships that change include Macbeth and Banquo, and Macbeth and King Duncan. The most dramatic relationship change that is shown is the relationship with his wife, Lady Macbeth. The movie represents the love of their relationship with kisses and hand holding. The mix between the love and manipulation is displayed when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth enter the dining room holding hands, after agreeing to kill King Duncan. An argument can be made that only Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth in their relationship. However, when Macbeth becomes King, the movie displays Lady Macbeth being manipulated by Macbeth through fear. The fear and horror on her face when Macbeth announces to her the murder of Banquo represents their relationship cracking. The power of their relationship is shown when they are in the courtyard, sitting on their horses just after Macbeth is crowned King. This short lived happiness is ended when Macbeth requests everyone, including his wife, leave his presence. The movie uses this instance to let the audience see Lady Macbeth’s self-esteem weakening along with their relationship.
