Friends are formed in odd ways, and even under weird circumstances, their friendships remain strong. Nick Carraway, is a quiet and reserved man, who knows his limits and flaws. Nick is presented with the opportunity to do more and become wealthy in the great city of New York, where he settled down next to a mysterious and puzzling man, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is a man of sudden wealth and social status, whereas Nick is a stockbroker. Despite their differences, Nick and Gatsby are able to connect and form a close bond. So, Nick becomes a companion and ally to Gatsby, advising him, encouraging him, and most of all, reuniting him with his long-lost love, Daisy Buchanan. They had bumped into each other unknowingly, Nick was surprised as he expected Gatsby to be an older man, but instead, a handsome young man greeted him. The first thing Nick noticed was his smile, a comforting smile. He wrote “..It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it…” (The Great Gatsby, 48). After his encounter with Gatsby, Nick went home curious and happy, questioning Gatsby’s legitimacy and admiring him at the same time.
