Romeo and Juliet, Pyramus and Thisbe, two sets of star crossed lovers. Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, and Ovid’s “Pyramus and Thisbe” are debatably similar. Is it a coincidence, or did Shakespeare copy Ovid’s ideas? Two pairs of lovers forbidden to be with each other, who end up taking their lives. These two stories also have their differences. Pyramus and Thisbe spend time getting to know each other, yet never marry. Where as Romeo and Juliet marry after looking at each other. Are the differences great enough, or is Shakespeare’s play just an elongated version of Ovid’s story? “They longed to marry, but their parents forbade,” (Ovid, 488).
