“Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character”. This quote by Albert
Einstein showed that Romeo, a character from Shakespeare’s novel, had numerous weaknesses. He had no control over his emotions or reactions. Romeo showed many times throughout the novel that he was a weak character.
Romeo was in love with a girl named Rosaline, whom he thought was the only girl he could ever love, but Rosaline chose to become a nun instead of staying with him. Romeo was so devastated that he locked himself in his own room for a while with the curtains drawn and not a single ray o light. He seriously thought about ending his own life, since he could apparently never love again; or so he thought. Just a few days later, he met Juliet at the Capulet’s party. What he did not know was that Juliet happened to be a Capulet. Romeo belonged to the Montagues, and their family feud traced back ages, but Romeo ironically said that Juliet is the only one he shall ever love. “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, For I ne’er saw true till this night.”(Act 1, scene 5, lines 59-60). Romeo made a conscious decision here, and denied the challenge. However, he made one mistake, and it turned into a slippery slope of events. Mercutio, another Montague, decided to accept the duel himself since Romeo did not want to. Romeo tried to hold back Mercutio, but Tybalt stabbed him while Romeo had him under his arm. Mercutio died, and cursed both houses. “A plague o’ both your houses!” (Act 3, scene 1, line 94) Out of a sudden rage, Romeo chased after Tybalt and slayed him.
