The Red Badge of Courage was one of the first war books to talk about war in a much different way than ever before. Stephen Crane’s book was very realistic in how it talked about war and the battle scenes. Many time books before his would show war as heroic and patriotic and not show the bloody and horrible conditions that most wars were fought under. This was also the first time that a book showed war where the soldiers were fearful and not sure what was going on. The battles were very realistic and showed how much fear the soldiers had who were in the middle of the battles. Crane used some very detailed and realistic scenes to make you understand how bad war is. I have watched “Saving Private Ryan” and “Band of Brothers” both of these war movies did a great job in showing you just how bad war can be and that men will do anything when they are in the middle of battle. I thought these two movies were very realistic looking and I got the same sort of feeling while reading this book, I actually felt like I could see what was happening during the battles of the Civil War. Stephen Crane did a great job of making you feel like you were in the battles, dodging the bullets and running away from
