Introduction For the review of Jurassic Park, by Michael Crichton, there will be a focus on the most prominent dinosaurs and their behavior. First the description of how the dinosaurs were depicted within the novel, followed by how their behaviors were accurate, or inaccurate, when compared to the fossil evidence that has been found around the dinosaurs. Velociraptor The depiction of the velociraptor in the novel is more accurate to the real-world dinosaur than the movie would depict. Velociraptors were depicted in a way that used scientific knowledge at the time of writing and some speculative elements for dramatic effect. The most prominent feature that Crichton revealed about the velociraptor was that it had a sickle-shaped claw on each lower limb. The claw paired with the sharp teeth that he also described would have been very indicative that the velociraptor was a predator and a carnivore. This behavior was depicted in the novel when they used steak as bait for the raptor. The novel also claimed that they would hunt in packs, this can’t be entirely confirmed, but it can be speculated to have been the case. However, Crichton’s possible pack behavior of velociraptors can be brought into question because there is no direct evidence that they specifically did this. Nor is there evidence that they were able to communicate with one another as they did in the novel. Tyrannosaurus Rex The depiction of the T. rex in the novel was used to draw tension and fear as the largest land predator to ever exist.
