Edgar Hoover joined the Bureau when it was next to nothing but by 1924 at the age of 29 Hoover became what is the now FBI’s director and changed the history of law enforcement to what we know it as today. J. Edgar Hoover has not only changed the face of the FBI but also has popularized it through his innovations in forensics which has and continues to actively protect the U.S. from criminals today. The FBI has not always been the strong fighting force we know it as today. Before Hoover joined the Bureau it was next to nothing, local P.D. had more jurisdiction then that of the FBI. Hoover got word of Mafia involvement however, he would not have them arrested for he had different intentions with them. “It was an extraordinary situation: The Federal Bureau of Investigation had evidence ahead of time that two well-known gangsters were planning a murder and that the head of the New England Mafia was involved. But when indictments in the case were handed down in 1967, the real killers -- who also happened to be informers for the F.B.I. -- were left alone, a tactic never used before in the FBI” (Fox 1.) This quote is important as it shows how the FBI is using smaller fish to catch bigger fish a tactic that was never used prior to the Hoover era. Hoover used an extraordinary amount of methods to catch criminals however he is notorious for his wiretaps. “It was an extraordinary situation: The Federal Bureau of Investigation had evidence ahead of time that two well-known gangsters were planning a murder and that the head of the New England Mafia was involved due to Hoover’s new wiretaps.” (Fox 1). This is important because it shows that because of Hoover and his upcoming of forensics and wiretaps the FBI was able to learn of a murder before they normally would have.
