Throughout my life, I have grown to learn how powerful fear is. Fear is a barrier capable of inhibiting us from doing things that could possibly be advantageous. It stops us from saying yes to an incredible opportunity and causes us to take a leap backward instead of a leap forward. I was able to learn and conquer one of my fears a few days before Christmas through a piano.
My family and I attended a Christmas and advent service at church and the lady who plays the piano was not present, so the director asked if could play for the service. Although I love music and have played piano for 6 years, I am not musically inclined and I stopped playing it my freshman year of high school to focus on school and Club Volleyball. I could not recall the last time I touched a key much less read a piece of music. The choir and attendees were singing in tune but all you could hear was my off key and off tempo piano playing every time I played the chord for “O Holy Night”. The only song that I was able to play adequately was Joy to the World and even then, I damaged the song. I was embarrassed of how bad I was playing, but I am proud to say that I was able to overcome my fear.
Fear is daunting because there is a chance that the outcome won’t be to your liking or that you don’t succeed. I did not succeed when I faced my fear of performing in front of my church but I am happy that I accepted the offer. It would have been easier not playing the piano and instead, finding someone else to take my place, but I would not have gained anything from it other than regret and speculation of what would have happened if I took the offer.
