Group B – Question #2 Thomas Edison had huge impacts on the United States. Not just because he brought electricity to all parts of the country or because he created the high-powered phonograph, but because he also had an influence on the modern business world. Because of Thomas Edison the business and industrial realm were able to merge with science. In the United States, modern technology had an evident distinction between industrial America and the American home before Thomas Edison came into the picture.
Although Thomas Edison is most often accredited with the invention of the electric light bulb, he did not actually invent it. More precisely, he invented the “first commercially practical incandescent light”(Boundless). Edison and his team at Menlo Park, his laboratory located in New Jersey produced a light bulb with a carbon filament by October of 1879 that lasted over fourteen hours. After years of working, Edison unveiled his light bulb at Menlo Park on New Year’s Eve of 1879(Lighting a Revolution). However, Edison was not the only person working on an incandescent light bulb at the time.

The Transcontinental Railroad made traveling more efficient and made a boom in the railroad market. The first incandescent light bulb was made by inventor Thomas Alva Edison in 1879. This was a huge scientific breakthrough for the future of electricity. People no longer had to use dangerous gaslights that could easily cause fires. Edison had created something scientists had been struggling with for years and finally made a long lasting, affordable light source.

James Watt was fascinated by how the steam engine had functioned so he decided to create one of his own, only bigger, better and more efficient. Throughout history, there have been individuals that have greatly altered the course of the United States, such as Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Era, Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War with the emancipation of slaves, or maybe even Henry Ford and his cars during the Industrial Revolution. Even though there are influential politicians and businessmen that exist in the United States, many influential American scientists exist as well, such as Albert Einstein and Alexander Graham Bell. Despite there being many influential and important scientists throughout the United States’ history, Thomas Edison is the most influential and important scientist thanks to his inventions that have revolutionized many modern industries: music, movies, and most importantly, electricity. Thomas Alva Edison is often considered one of the best inventors of all time and has had a massive impact on modern life despite his work being much over one hundred years old.
Edison was a man of great things, including the phonograph, the first picture camera and the light bulb. Though many feel that the light bulb may not have had such a great impact on American businesses, it actually did. Prior to the invention of the light bulb, factory owners would use candles and oil lamps to keep the workplace lit for the workers. These methods posed as safety threats and “fires...and other misfortunes were common” in the factories (Progressive Era-Social Welfare History Project). Use of the light bulb also lowered fire hazards in large factories, which in turn lowered worker injuries and fatalities (Invention(Overview)).

This shows a side of people glorifying Thomas Edison for his amazing achievements but completely overlooking all the bad things he did while trying to make a name for himself. “Edison’s detractors insist that his greatest invention was his own fame, cultivated at the expense of collaborators and competitors alike. ”(The NewYorker)
There were many inventions, or new creations that were made throughout our history. These inventions greatly impacted and expanded towards America. Many inventors like Andrew Carnegie or Thomas Edison created new items that helped America expand on technology, traveling, businesses, better jobs, new opportunities, and many more. Some inventions like the creation of telephones, steel, oil, electricity, brakes, and other inventions help create how America is today. Throughout history America has had its ups and downs.
The Great Change The Industrial Revolution represented great change, from the year 1760 to 1820-1840. This movement began from Great Britain and it affected the way people lived. Some inventors that contributed to the process were James Watt and his steam engine (Watt’s Steam Engine), John McAdam (road transportation), and finally George Stephenson and his son Robert Stephenson (The Liverpool- Manchester Railroad). The question asked was which set of inventions caused the greatest change and what were some pros and cons of the inventions?
He was the youngest of seven children and his mother was a teacher. Thomas Edison helped invent over 1000 inventions, some of which include the camera and the microphone, but Edison’s largest success in life was the recreation of the light bulb, in 1879 when he discovered that a carbon filament inside an oxygen-free bulb could glow (Science for Kids). Significance: The most obvious significance of the recreation of the electric light bulb is that people now had easy access to a light to use after the sun went down.
Thomas Edison is an American inventor and businessman, who has been described as “America’s greatest inventor.” His tireless work efforts and dedication to science not only helped him to create inventions that have advanced technology , but also become an inspirational figure for Americans. His improvements and inventions on objects that were already invented helped the lives of over millions of Americans. He helped to build America’s economy during some of its more vulnerable years as a new nation. Thomas Edison’s inventions have helped to advance our society though his dedications and knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and chemical sciences.
One year after opening, it was deemed the largest testing laboratory in the world. Thomas Edison was a creative inventor that pushed the science world forward 100 years by inventing the lightbulb, quadruplex transmitter, telegraph, helping with the making of the telephone and much more. Plus he had a major positive impact on his decade by serving in the civil war, saving lives and creating jobs. He also had a major impact on the world by allowing safe lasting light with the light bulb, easy communication with the telegraph, and electrical distribution.
