Courage “I wanted you to see what real courage is instead of getting the idea that it’s a man with a gun in his hand,” said Atticus (page 144). What this quote means is courage is more than a man pointing a gun at your head it means that you can do almost anything if you set your heart to it. In the book How to Kill a Mockingbird courage is found by many characters through their actions. These characters are Scout, Boo Radley and Atticus. Scout finds courage when she speaks out in class to Miss Caroline. Miss Caroline was trying to pay for Walter’s lunch but he wouldn’t accept it. Scout stands up for him and tells Miss Caroline that he is a Cunningham and won’t accept stuff that he can’t pay back. This shows Scout’s courage because she is standing up for someone other than herself.
Courage is found by Boo Radley when he stabs Bob Ewell to save the kids. He had enough courage to come out of his home to save people he doesn't know. That was Courageous because he risked his own safety to save someone not everyone wants alive who he believe is not guilty just because he is black. He is standing to have a fair trial for Tom Robinson. When the mob arrives, they tell Atticus to get out of the way and he refuses. Scout then joins him and notices Mr. Cunningham. Scout talks to him about his “legal entitlements” and his son and asks him to say hello for her. Mr. Cunningham is ashamed of this and tells the mob to go home and they leave. In this case, courage was shown by more than just Atticus. Courage can be held by more than just one person. In this case it is shown by Mr. Cunningham too because he stopped himself from making a huge mistake by killing Tom
