I like the quote said by Scout “Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.”(pg) This quote means that people don’t know the value of things until they lose it. In this case, Scout began valuing reading only after she was in danger of losing it due to Miss Caroline lecturing her for being able to however by not her teaching. Scout interestingly compares how her love for reading grew when she was going to lose it to how people start to love their ability to breath when a certain situation arrives when they somehow lose it is an interesting comparison she made. Maycomb is a small confined town in the south where nothing appears to happen or change. The reason behind the monotonous cycle is the state of the people being of having no surplus income, nothing valuable to buy, and the idea that there is nothing worthwhile outside of town. From the information from the quote, I can infer that the people of Maycomb may be close-minded as the town is separated and never was introduced to different ideas and people. In a text to world connection, the life and mindset of people in Maycomb emphasizes the life of people in the entire US during the Great Depression. The people of times were at a standstill as there wasn’t anything that can cause people to grow and nothing out there to strive for. The people suffering from the Great Depression were too poor to buy goods and no goods to buy. In addition, people couldn’t have dreams or as stated in the novel nothing “outside the boundaries of Maycomb County” as they were barely trying to live in the present with the crippling economy. Families like the Cunninghams represented the entire farmer population affected by the crash as they suffered severely and their way of life showed the impact. These impacts were evident by the condition of the Walter Cunningham Jr. such as the “absence of shoes ”(pg) that led to hookworms from exposure to the ground. From this advice Scout could understand why miss Caroline reacted the way she did by punishing Scout for being able to read by a method not of hers. Scout can utilize this “trick” as Atticus uses it throughout her entire life to better understand people. By the end of the book Scout could have used her father’s advice several times. One major occasion was to see why Mayella went with the story that Tom Robison raped her. Atticus states how Bob Ewell beat his children evidenced by “He had to take it out on somebody and I'd rather it be me than that houseful of children out there.”(pg) Mayella was afraid of her father beating her if the truth came out that she was the one who made advances toward Tom Robison. Using Atticus’s advice Scout could’ve saw a different side to the case and not only see Mayella as being guilty of all
