Stop the Violence, Break the Silence
“RAINN”, Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network says that every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. * So, (name a girl in the class) walking home from school tonight? This could be you, oh and (name a boy in the class), this could also be you. * You might not typically think of a male getting raped but believe it or not men and boys are also affected by sexuel violence. * Have you ever heard about a boy being raped? Have you ever heard about a girl being raped? * Lady Gaga ring a bell? Today we hear a lot about girls being raped, but we don’t hear much about boys being raped. It wasn’t that long ago that women were afraid to come forward and talk about sexual assault. For instance; in an article written by Lorenzo Jensen for The Thought Blog, an unnamed man tells his story: “I’m a man. I was raped as a child. (I was only 4 years old). (...) My mom called the police when I told her a few weeks later. They didn’t even investigate. They said since it was a girl doing it to a guy, it was just “experimentation.” Said it was okay.” Studies show that when a man reports getting raped police and investigators are less likely to take the charges seriously than when a women does the same. For these men, having their claims ignored can be like rubbing salt in an open wound.
Men face additional challenges because of stereotypes and social attitudes about men and masculinity. Adam, a survivor of sexual assault says: There’s a stigma attached to it. That ,oh’ you’re a man; you should be able to fend him/her off.” If a man is raped by another man there is the embarrassment of being associated with homosexuality. On the other hand, in a case where a man is being sexually assaulted by a woman, if he fights back, he will surely get as much blame as if he was the one raping a woman, It is a no win
