As unbelievable as it seems, In the United States, there is a prevalent rape culture. In “A Peaceful woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” by Linda Hasselstrom, depicts and highlights this reality for women living in fear of being sexually intimidated or harassed by men. According to a study, many women will face either attempted or completed sexual assault within their lifetime (Rainn.org). Sexual harassment is real and prevailing problem in this country, It’s has long lasting effects on it victims, that can emotional cripple them for life. Firstly, let’s us define exactly what is “Sexual Violence”? Sexual violence, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is an “illegal sexual contact that usually involves force upon a person without consent or is inflicted upon a person who is incapable of giving consent (as because of age or physical or mental incapacity) or who places the assailant (such as a doctor) in a position of trust or authority” …show more content…
As stated in an academic journal, about 94% of women who are raped will have a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) state two weeks after the rape (Rothbaum). Those women who PSTD persists for the long term had reported to be feel emotionally detach, suffers from a lack of sleep, have recurring fastbacks to the incident and go through the event again in their mind. Over time, these victims will experience both physical and psychological drama. Women who had been raped, are known to contract sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS, have extensive genital injuries, and endure chronic pain.
