“I carry a weapon. I got a death threat a few years ago and was really scared. But I don’t want bodyguards. I am my own security.” Miranda Lambert stated. For my literary analysis I have chosen “A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun”, written by Linda M. Hasselstrom. This short story is about a woman who lives twenty-five miles from the nearest town, she finds herself in dangerous encounterings many times within ten years. Women alone are not entirely save by themselves, by carrying a gun and knowing how to use it, they can protect themselves. There are plenty of things that can happen to a woman when she is walking alone, especially if you live in the middle of nowhere and the closest town to you is twenty-five miles away. “I am a peace-loving woman. But several events over the past ten years have convinced me I’m safer when I carry a pistol.” (343) In the short story, the writer explained different events that have happen to her in her life. “A pistol is not the only way to avoid being raped or murdered in today’s world, but, intelligently wielded, it can shift the balance of power and provide a measure of safety.” (346) Yes, a pistol is a very powerful weapon, the writer stated in the story that she only used her weapon twice, once when a few guys were littering and they would not leave her alone, the second time was when she had a man playing cat-and-mouse with her and she flashed her gun, never seeing him again. A pistol does help women to keep them safe when it is used the right way.
Hasselstrom does a great job with this story, by explaining why she has found herself carrying a gun. Women alone are not entirely save by themselves, by carrying a gun and knowing how to use it, they can protect themselves.
