In “The Gif of Therapy”, the guide for the novice or seasoned therapists written as a personal memoir, Yalom provides his insights on various aspects of the counseling process. In 85 succinct chapters, the author offers his unique pearls of wisdoms that come from his 40 years of practicing psychotherapy and psychiatry. Each chapter discusses different aspects of the therapeutic process, including building rapport with a client and stressing the here-and-now perspective when working with patients. Some of his advice, covered in many graduate courses, seems simple and obvious, like “Never be sexual with your patients”, or “Be supportive and emphatic”. Some suggestions, such as “Don’t be afraid of touching your patient”, would probably make more conservative therapists uncomfortable. Beyond his considerable expertise and experience in helping others, in “The Gift of Therapy” Yalom shows great passion for his work, so it was easy for me to become engrossed in the book. His insights reaffirmed what I have learned about the therapy, and included new, illuminating details. Many of his suggestions focus on the process of building respectful, therapeutic relationship, “the real agent of change”, between a therapist and a patient.
