The Victim friendly unit was established in 1996 primarily to proactively and reactively police crimes of sexual nature committed against women and children in a manner sensitive to the victim. This is the culmination of a number of initiatives aimed at providing essential support services to boys and girls affected by abuse . Coordinated by the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Services , Zimbabwe Republic Police , Ministry of Education and various non-government organisations , the system seeks to deliver comprehensive , specialised psychosocial care, medical, legal and referral services to boys and girls who have witnessed , experienced or perpetrated abuse . With the VFU being a special unit in the ZRP, introduced to protect the rights of children and women, the purpose of this study was to assess the role of the Victim friendly unit towards the protection of children’s rights in Matobo District

According to VFU Matobo cases of abuse increase daily. According to Chitereka (2010) rural children are two times likely to be abused and most of these cases are not reported. Despite there being many institutions and stakeholders working tirelessly to curb child abuse, cases of child abuse are sky rocketing daily.
