Rock as a Change, Not a Genre At the beginning of the semester, the class was asked to classify rock based on certain criteria. A few of the answers shouted amongst the crowd included classification based on the instrumentation used and the popularity of the music. Any standard definition of rock restricts it to being classified based on the instrumentation used to produce the music. Instrumentation can be used to classify rock as a genre, but rock is much deeper than just a category that music fits into. Historically speaking, rock came about through a variety of different musical influences, and these inter-connecting webs of different music styles have brought about modern-day rock, making rock not only a genre but a representation of change through time. Think back to Appalachia in the 1800s where the fiddle is the primary instrument. After the fiddle came Blackface Minstrels—which were shows that borrowed African styles and wove them into American styles. They experimented with new studio techniques, and popularized techniques such as spliced audio loops, overdubbing, and compression, arguably making them one of the best bands in history. Not only did The Beatles experiment with new sound, but they transformed how music was presented. For example, beforehand up until the 1950s, singles were widely more popular than albums, and each song on an album was unlike the others. However, The Beatles introduced concept albums with the release of their Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, in which every song on the album was conceptually connected to the others. Of course, The Beatles were not the only band to make innovations in music. There were other bands like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, the Eagles, etcetera.
