Hector is a Trojan Prince, His father is King Priam and his mother is Queen Hecuba. He was known as the greatest fighter in Troy during his time. He was the first-born son, meaning he was the heir to his father’s throne, and he had a younger brother Paris. Hector was married to Andromache, but together they had an infant son, and his name was Scamandrius (he was also called Astyanax). Hector was killed in a battle against Achilles, fighting for his country and his beliefs.
In the epic poem, the Illiad by Homer, Achilles is the most courageous character. For example, Achilles avenges his best friend Patroclus death by battling Hector for revenge. After Achilles is informed about Patroclus death he says, "if Hector does not feel my battering spear tear the life out of him, making him pay in his own blood for the slaughter of Patroclus!" (ln 28-30). His bravery shines through this act because he puts himself out there to avenge his friends death.
When Achilles heard this, he cast away the chains of honor and pride that he had constantly blamed for his inaction and armed himself with wrath. And when he joined the battle-mass, he was not a lion, but a demon. When he slew Hector, he cut Hector’s ankles and dragged him behind his chariot, dishonoring both himself and the corpse of Troy’s greatest general. Achilles was never a hero.
It was known to both of them that they were going to die, Hector the greatest of the Trojans and Achilles the champion of the Greeks, but Achilles had an advantage, he was immortal due to when his mother dipped him in the Styx, the river of the Underworld. She held him by his feet, which left his heels vulnerable. Even though hector was mortal he was as well a great warrior.
Hector is portrayed as a wise and compassionate leader who is genuinely concerned for his people's welfare. He is the prince of Troy and takes his role seriously, which is evident when he decides to lead his army into battle to protect his city, even though he knows the risks involved. In contrast, Achilles is portrayed as a reckless warrior who is only concerned with his own glory and pleasure. He is shown to be selfish and impulsive, as seen in his decision to kill Hector and drag his body behind his
Selflessness is putting others needs before one's self, which is extremely similar to the definition of bravery. Hector is selfless because he literally died to save his kingdom. Next, Hector was clearly a responsible warrior. He stood up for his kingdom, and became a very important war leader of the Trojans. As a Prince of
Achilles is a hero because he was loyal, determined, and empathetic. Achilles was loyal to the achaean army and his friends and family throughout the Iliad. He joined the achaean army and he killed Hector to avenge Patroclus’ death. “Hector is hit by my spear first, losing his life and paying me compensation for killing Menoetius' son, Patroclus” (Homer 22. 93-95).
Throughout the Trojan War, Hector of Troy was excessively smart and that helped him become such a good leader. Now you understand just who Hector, the Prince of Troy, and Hector, the one who got away, were.
Odysseus-The famous Greek hero Everyone wants to be a hero, because that is a honor. But no one exactly knows what a hero is and what their life like? Homer, the famous Greek poet, he writes a famous epic the "Odyssey" to record and praise the famous hero Odysseus, who is the king of the Ithaca. For the Troy war, Odysseus has to leave his family to lead his army to fight the war for 7 years. After the war, Odysseus and his men try to find their way back to their island, but many troubles show up, Odysseus uses his talent to overcome all kinds of troubles.
Achilles was provoked and driven by anger and due to that he seeks revenge on Hector for killing his "dearest comrade". He then avenges his friend by killing Hector. Which is why I don't believe that Achilles should be considered or thought of as a hero because no hero kills somebody just for revenge or to satisfy himself. I do agree that Achilles was a very brave soldier in the war and he has a loveable heart because he wept when his friend was killed, but heroes don't do the things Achilles did for instance, Achilles acted like a spoiled brat at times, he was even manipulating his mother to put the Greeks into believing that they can't win without him. Achilles was
Hector is shown to be devoted to this war between the Trojans and Greeks, and shows this when he refuses wine from his mother Hecuba when he first returns to Priam’s palace, telling her that it will only make him weak, and that instead she should go to the temple of Athena and pray that she pity Troy and its people (Book VI, 11. 275-88, pg. 249). Returning back home and making his way to his brother Paris’ house, Hector is completely ready to chastise him, showing his anger towards him as needed for not being out there and fighting in the war he himself caused (VI, 11. 342-47, pg. 251) but rather sitting in his house with his armor and weapons surrounding him. Hector is also given the opportunity to lay with Helen and relax, but instead says “my heart is out there with our fighting men” (VI, 11. 380, pg. 252). This makes it evident that he is a noble man and that his only purpose now is to fight with the Trojans, seeing himself as “One of the best, to fight in Troy’s ranks” (VI, 11.
Hector, as well as Achilles, does not fear death but shows courage. Homer has many adjectives to describe Hector such as, “Glorious Hector.”(17.845) Achilles and Hector both parade many of the same qualities. Each demonstrates how their society and Homer determines a hero. They’re adored for their noble qualities and the difficult tasks they achieve.
The Iliad begins with jealousy and ends in a huge loss after ten years of Trojan War. A story was shared, a thousand ships launched, and a demi god killed all because of a beautiful face. That demi god was a hero. Best Greek Warrior and son of Thetis and Peleus. Author, Homer (1990) indirectly reveals Achilles as the Greek hero of the epic poem the Iliad evidenced by him having a mysterious origin, he was called upon to make a journey, and he is not a fool nor invincible.
These abilities are important as a warrior because both his men and the hero reflect and are influenced by them. Some of the abilities are excellence in war, courage, leadership and fighting qualities. These qualities are seen through the heroic characters Hector and Achilles. When Achilles is not present with his men, the Greeks are well defeated by the Trojans with no motivation or support. Achilles is also described by his men as a power figure when the poem says “These were his words,/ and all Achaeans gave a roar of joy/ to hear the Prince abjure his rage.”
The Iliad also spotlights the individual qualities of a Greek hero or non-hero. Numerous characters in the Iliad demonstrated exceptional qualities of a Greek person that was valued, such as bravery and helpfulness and that was disproved of like selfishness. One trait that is highly appreciated by the greeks in the Iliad is bravery. In battle Hector killed Achilles´s best friend Pactorlos in battle.
