3885 Wednesday Wars February “You should learn from your competitor, but never copy. ”-Jack Ma. In The Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt, the lead character, Holling Hoodhood has a dad who’s constantly agitated and distressed about his job. If you do one little thing that could mess up his business, it could affect the descendants after him. Holling’s dad finally has a chance to have his verge of happiness.
According to Howard Thurman in Chapter One, the conventional Christian word is muffled, confused, and vague. Thurman discusses how there is no basic relationship between just having the simple practice of brotherhood in relations of life and the ethical pretensions of our faith. Thurman states how for years we have studied different people of the world, and how the one’s living next to us as our neighbors as objects of missionary work. He comments how we don’t treat them at all as if they are our brother or sisters in Christ.
Hate. It’s something that we all have in ourselves. No matter who you are or what kind of person you are you have hate. But it’s how we control our hate that makes us who we are. This is very well shown in “No More Dead Dogs” by Gordon Korman and the book “Ball Don’t Lie” by Matt de la Pena.
Mark Twain once said, “The very ink with which history is written is merely fluid prejudice.” Even as we as a globalized society have improved greatly, prejudice appears far too often and is expressed everywhere even in today’s world. During World War 2, prejudice was peaking in society. In Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatuski Houston and James D. Houston, the main theme is that silent prejudice hurts the most. Wakatsuki avoids portraying open racism and prejudice in the book in order to examine he subtle and often unspoken prejudices that occur everyday life, which are often the most hurtful.
I have heard countless information on racism, but it is always appalling to read it from a first person experience since I have not dealt with it on a personal level before. By providing his own personal stories, it allows the reader to be brought into his world. He leaves details that allowed me to picture him walking down a busy street with an uneasy feeling. He shares “over the years, I learned to smother the rage I felt at so often being taken for a criminal” (397) which illustrates the emotion behind racism. It must have taken a tremendous amount of will to not give into his rage.
The media is illuminating racial relations in the South and they are showing how people in the North are being treated. When people in the North sees how the segregationists are treating African Americans in the South, they support the side of integration. In “A Mighty Long Way”, Carlotta said that, “Finally one of them delivered a crushing blow to the back of Wilson”s head with an heavy object believed to be a brick” (pg.85 Lanier). People are seeing how white racists are attacking African-Americans.
In Robert Cormier’s “We All Fall Down” there are many life lessons that are represented. One of them is how extreme hatred can cause you to do things that you normally wouldn’t do. But there are always consequences for your hatfull actions. Extreme hatred has caused people to do horrible things not just in this book but in real life as well. Many people have been killed or greatly hurt by other peoples hateful actions.
An abomination is something that is greatly disliked or hated.
The article “School of Hate” was written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, who is an American Magazine writer who lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has written many articles for the likes of Rolling stone, Gentleman’s Quarterly, and The New Yorker. In the article Erdely discusses the bullying and homophobia that happened in the Anoka-Hennepin school district during the mid-2000s. Her article gives both points of view from the kids being bullied, as well as from the religious conservatives who thought that nothing was wrong with the homophobic slurs that were being said to children and teenagers. One may disagree with the perspective of the religious conservatives.
Hateful means someone did something so bad that hurt someone else seriously. The story starts in a happy beginning, but ends in a sad ending. Abigail is the main character to cause the result. So there must be some personality she has to support her to complete her plot. Personality of hateful is one of them.
Terror groups rose up to assure white supremacy in the South. African Americans could never win, especially when the Ku Klux Klan always forced them into debt. Although government awareness was brought up when they interviewed Henry Blake in Document 5, nothing could be done to stop the terrorizing feelings of individuals who fail to see that people of color are human as much as someone white is. African Americans worked to get the rights they deserved so of course they would be proud of what they accomplished. Document 4 is an account of Lucy McMillan, an African American, who had her house burned down by the Ku Klux Klan for “bragging” about her land owning rights.
