Today I asked a Military Police Officer to process my pay. He laughed. I then asked him to prepare a memorandum using Army Regulation 25-20, Preparing and Managing Correspondence. Again, he laughed. A Soldiers career is a profession of arms. We work hard to become experts in our field of study. Behind a desk or behind a weapon we are highly trained and efficient at our set task. In this essay, I will explain why Human Resources Sergeants (HR) are needed in the profession of arms and why what we do is no laughing matter.

The core functions of an HR sergeant are to Man the Force, Provide HR Services, Coordinate Personnel Support, and Conduct Operations & Planning. These duties are the reason HR are so vital and important to the Army. HR sergeants continue to educate themselves on the latest technology available. We not only have to stay up to date on regulation, we also have to maintain fitness to pass Army Physical Fitness Test and qualify on our assigned weapon.
As a profession of arms we have to keep balance. The two ways of balancing the role of a professional leader are with strategic leaders and the relationship between the Army’s culture and institutional practices. When the roles are balanced leaders have more professional satisfaction and are more likely to remain in the military. Military-technical, human developmental, moral-ethical, political-cultural expertise are the main four fields of the Army’s professional expertise.
