The book The Book Thief written by Markus Zusak is about a young girl in 1939 Nazi Germany trying to find her way with the help of her new foster family, the Hubermanns. The Hubermanns play a very important role in Liesel Meminger’s life. Hans Hubermann, Liesel’s foster father has the greatest impact on her. He was the first to form a bond with her when she first arrived at there house on 33 Himmel Street. Hans does so much not only for Liesel but for everyone else too. He should be known as a hero. When Liesel, at just 9 years old first arrives in the Hubermann house she refuses to bath. After all she just watched her brother die. Hans isn’t a Nazi well at least he doesn’t agree with the Nazi party. November 1940, Max Vandenburg arrived at 33 Himmel street.(185) Max wasn’t just any person, he was a jew. Hans took Max in for quite sometime, providing him with food and shelter. This isn’t the only time Hans was generous enough to help a jew. “ The jew stood before him, expecting another handful of derision, but he watched with everyone else as Hans Hubermann held his hand out and presented a piece of bread, like magic.” Hans gave a starving jew a ration of bread. This truly shows how kind Hans his. People in Germany who support the Nazi party are already having a hard enough time getting food as it is. Another thing to take into consideration is that it’s a serious crime to associate yourself with a jew and help them out in anyway. After the bread exchanged hands from Hans to the Jew a Nazi soldier was soon at the scene. The jew was whipped 6 times, as well as Hans Hubermann.(394)
