Friendship in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn In this novel, Huckleberry Finn, known as Huck Finn, takes friendship so seriously that he is willing to swear blood oaths on it. “Now we’ll start this band of robbers and call it Tom Sawyer’s Gang. Everybody that wants to be join has to take an oath, and write his name in blood”(5). This just restates how serious Huck is to having friends. Huck Finn becomes to find friendships during his adventures of running away. The most important friendship he has is with Jim, a runaway slave. Twain portrays friendship between Huck and Jim that later becomes a father and son relationship.

During the time Huck spent with Jim, he was faced with problem to turn Jim in because he was a runaway slave and to him seemed the right thing to do. Huck realizes that the Jim is only the companion he has at the moment of his journey and decides not to turn him. Now we as readers can infer from the novel that their friendship has changed due to the many challenges they faced throughout the novel. Jim eventually turns into a father figure that Huck Finn never had due to his dad being abusive and a drunk. Jim teaches Huck Finn some life lessons throughout their journey together also, Jim shows that he is now his father figure by making sure he has food, shelter , and knowing that they will eventually be okay.
Huckleberry Finn, in the novel, tries to protect and help Jim , just as Jim does the same for Huck Finn. Huck Finn has to come up with many different stories after another to keep Jim’s real identity hidden from other people they encountered due to Jim trying to become a free man instead of a slave. This tells the readers that, Huck Finn is willing to do and say many things to protect his friend Jim in the end as Jim tries to gain freedom as a free man instead of being a slave for another man or
