What type of friendship do you have with your friend? In this world there are many types of relationships including mutualistic, commensalistic, and parasitic. Mutualistic is a relationship that both people benefit. Commensalistic is a relationship where one person benefits and the other isn’t harmed but they also don’t benefit. Lastly, parasitic is when one person benefits and the other is harmed or even dies. In the movie, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Harper Lee, the relationship between Huck and Jim is mutualistic. Huck and Jim always stick together.
One scene in the movie that illustrates how Huck and Jim’s relationship is mutualistic arises in the woods when Huck finds Jim and they are both trying to escape. Huck is trying to escape from his papa because he thinks he is psycho and a drunk, so he runs off, faking his death. Along the way, he finds Jim trying to escape from slavery. Jim is curious if people are saying things about him or what the bounty is if someone finds him. in this scene, Huck dresses like a girl and goes into a stranger’s house to try and find out more information. When Huck asks, he finds out that people think that Jim is the one who murdered Huck. During this conversation he is trying to steal things to bring back for them but ultimately fails. This is an example of mutualism because Jim is helping Huck figure out more and in the process, also figures out more about himself. They both find out things that they needed to know.
