Working within the human service profession we must have attributes that lend to aiding the clients in renewing their cognitive framework and reaching their set goals. We cannot assist them in accomplishing their goals if our minds and hearts are not in a positive state. Human service work must be done in a non-bias and productive environment or its efforts will be in vain.
Some common bias within Jeff’s agency noticed were discrimination, a lack of cultural competency, and improper testing instruments. These prejudices can lead to false assessments and misdiagnosis of culturally diverse clients. The test is not mean for the Latino/s culture therefore the white counselor are expecting them to react and patriciate in the process as some of the Caucasian race would. Acculturation is define as taking on of cultural pattern of another group (Diller, 20160). They are misdiagnosis with personality disorders because they are not acting white enough. When cultures values clash it can be difficult in trying to conform to the customs of a new culture. Latino/a have strong traditional gender roles within their culture, having to perform outside those roles can be problematic for the families. The counselors must stop giving off the impression that they are merely tolerate the client, but actually take the time in learning and respecting their viewpoints by recognizing their differences as strengths. Being mindful of clients and co-workers feelings (Sutton, 2017). Diversity can cause conflict which is not always a negative when worked through for the good of the relationship.
