Among them human smuggling, human trafficking, irregular movement of persons, migrant workers, boat people and asylum seekers are also crucial issues in the international relations arena. These two factors then let the author continue to discuss the errors and inequities within the Justice System as well as the overall lack of intervention and support to help people who are being trafficked.
It is really perturbing that when suddenly when driving into a certain neighborhood, or street, and in a specific time of night, you see various women slowly starting to appear walking in the night. While children wonder why those women are out so late, and parents try unsuccessfully to distract them from the situation, no one truly dares to change anything. Most just simple choose to look away, not aware of the horrors these people face. The sole idea of one’s own family members in this industry, would make anyone’s skin crawl. Sex trafficking has stained society’s history, present, and sadly, it’s future.
Many of the adults and children put into prostitution were at one point abused horribly. Furthermore, 98 percent of women become prostitutes if abused at a young age. Children were taken from their families and forced to have sex against their will. These traffickers can be charged for sexual assault, kidnapping, and abuse. The population is growing, between 100,000 and 300,000 children are being taken away to work as prostitutes.
Sex Trafficking is a form of modern day slavery that exists throughout the United States and globally. It is one of the biggest lies in society (Farley et., 2014). The Vanderbilt Law Review indicates that the majority of prostitutes do not enter the prostitution lifestyle on their own free will choice, but instead becomes a prostitute due to a variety of vulnerabilities that both pimps and traffickers exploit. This explains why young women get blindsided and think they are becoming a prostitute when in reality they are a sex trafficking victim (Elrod 2015). When the United States made prostitution illegal, it did not change the mentality of the johns.
The earliest form of global human trafficking began with the African slave trade. The American and European continents were involved as buyers, and the different African groups were both items of trade and middlemen, it was the first known international flow of human trafficking. Women trafficking is one of the earliest forms of human trafficking. It is the trade and the procurement of females against their will , most commonly for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor, or commercial sexual exploitation(forced prostitution) for the trafficker or other parties.
As seen earlier, America has come further in their quest to put an end to both forms of human trafficking, but they are not even close to reaching that goal. Currently, human trafficking generates $9.5 billion yearly in the United Sates alone. Approximately 300,000 children are at risk of being prostituted in America, and the average age of entry into prostitution for a child victim is 13-14 years old. The Department of Justice identified the top twenty human trafficking jurisdictions in the country, this included: New York, Los Angeles, Long Island, Washington D.C., and San Francisco. A “pimp” can make up to $200,000 per child each year and the average “pimp” has 6 girls.
Sex-trafficking, in the form that it persists today, was not seen as a major issue by politicians until the 1990s. Today, prostitution is criminalized in most U.S. states with few exceptions in locations, but this does not combat the people who behind much of the organized operation.
