What is Human Trafficking?
Human trafficking is modern day slavery. It is the exploitation of a person through force, fraud or coercion. Human smuggling and human trafficking are different crimes. Human smuggling is the illegal movement of someone across a border. Human trafficking is the illegal exploitation of a person. Human trafficking is about exploitation, not transportation. Human trafficking is a highly profitable crime, and a violation of human rights. It occurs in every part of the world including here in Pakistan. It happens in our big cities, big suburbs and even in rural towns. It can happen to anyone. Human trafficking victims can be Pakistani citizens or from other countries. It happens here in Pakistan and overseas. Through fraud, force, or coercion victims are made to work for little pay or no pay. Very often these victims are forced to manufacture or grow the products we use and consume every day. Victims of forced labor can be found in factories and farms, doing construction work and more. One expert says that trafficking happens where need meets greed. I would like to add one more element to that. Trafficking happens in sectors where workers are excluded from protections., and denied the right to organize. Trafficking doesn’t happen in a vacuums. It all began when slavery was adoptef in ancient History. Majority of the people have no positive connection with the word ‘slavery’. From as far back as history can recall, slavery was commonly performed. Ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece, the Vikings, the Ottoman Empire and the famous Atlantic slave trade where African states conquered one another and sold their own people to Europeans. Many of these slaves would find their way into the new world, and slavery continued in America up until the 13th amendment was ratified in the United States. Many people like to think that slavery started after this amendment, but they are completely wrong. Slavery has to be the biggest example of history repeating itself. It’s been practiced in almost every continent, and for some reason it’s still going. By definition slavery occurs when one person completely controls another person using violence or the threat of violence to maintain that control, exploits them economically, and they cannot walk away. According to reports, some 30 million people are currently slaves around the world. The United States Department of Health and Human Services reports that after drug dealing trafficking of humans is tied with arms dealing as the second largest criminal industry in the
