Theresa Flores’s “The Slave Across the Street,” is a personal anecdote whose main purpose is to make Americans aware of the reality of human trafficking being in the U.S. and in our neighborhoods. The book shows how even in seemingly good life situations, traffickers are able to pick out and victimize those that are vulnerable. This does not only happen in third world countries, or in inner city, low income housing. Human trafficking is apparent throughout the U.S., in all levels of socio-economic classes. By Flores telling her story, she achieves the purpose in showing a different side of human trafficking that most people do not realize it has.
There will be no solution to the growing problem of human trafficking until more people are aware of how human trafficking takes place, until states begin to deter human trafficking more effectively, and until more individuals take an active role in reporting possible acts of trafficking to the proper authorities. Therefore human trafficking cannot be defined as any one particular crime; it is not simply sexual exploitation. Other forms of human trafficking are labor trafficking, slavery and in some cases human trafficking consist of the removal of organs. It is much more than that because human trafficking has many different characteristics. Hunter McKenzie Kelley Reno English 1302 February 14, 2016 Human Trafficking Rhetorical Analysis Human trafficking is a hot button issue in today’s society, and their are quite a few myths about the said topic. Many first world country citizens believe these myths to be true, but not in the case of David Feingold, the author of “Human Trafficking”. Feingold argues against most of the most common myths in the trafficking industry. Feingold’s main goals are to display to the Feingold reader the common misconceptions and prove them wrong with textual evidence.
By 1600, Portugal, Great Britain, France, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, and North America were all shipping Africans away from their homeland to work as slaves in European countries (Young, 2011). Although this was not the first known instances of human trafficking, it is noted as the most organized, intentional persecution of a specific population. It wasn’t until 1865 that slavery was made illegal in the United States. However, human trafficking continued to persist in various ways. In 1902, the focus on human trafficking seemed to turn from the African population to white women and girls.
The Atlantic slave trade was a horrific event that impacted human history. This was a time in history where humans were captured as a prize of war, a tribute to a higher power or kidnapped by local traders. The American Continental Congress and British parliament held high authority of planters, merchants and political leaders that depended on the slave trade for labor. The slave ships transported Africans and began to bring a new Atlantic world of labor. “It was a factory and a prison” (44).
Slavery was abolished in 1865, and yet it is among one of the world’s greatest issues. Is there enough being done that sheds a light on human trafficking? All around the world human trafficking exists and there needs to be a stop to it. Human Trafficking is a national problem because current laws are ineffective and therefore action needs to be taken to reduce the problem. Human Trafficking became our modern day slavery.
