Atul Gawande uses his experiences as a surgical resident to write his article “The Man Who Couldn’t Stop Eating” in the July 9th, 2001 issue of the New Yorker. In this article, he discusses the power of appetite, using a balance between emotional experiences—specifically those of Vincent Caselli—and medical studies, to ultimately educate the public about the costs and benefits of gastric bypass surgery. Before delving into the complexities of the gastric bypass operation, Gawande introduces the story of Vincent Caselli, a man who underwent the procedure after a lifetime of struggling with obesity and his appetite. Gawande informs the readers of Caselli’s development into adulthood specifically showing the effect obesity had on Caselli’s socialization.

Who do you imagine when someone says food insecurity or hunger? Do you imagine someone severely underweight? Or maybe children in third world countries because surely hunger isn 't here in the United states. But, in fact, hunger is here in the United States, the documentary A Place at the Table defines someone who is food insecure as someone who does not know where their next meal is coming from, they have no idea how to manage, find, or afford food.
Wright himself explains this condition in the following words. “Why could I not eat when I was hungry? Why did I always have to wait until others were through? I could not understand why some people had enough food and others did not.” (Wright 26)

Membership in each clan is through the mother: you belong to your mother’s clan. To be without a clan was to be without human identity.
In the United States there are many children and adults that go hungry, due to financial problems. With the economy and how high cost of living is, it’s hard to provide, food for the family. The results of hunger on children in America are not having the right nutrition, can have serious implication for a child’s physical and mental health. Also food insecurity is harmful to all people, but it is particularly devastating to children.
Hunger is a serious problem throughout the world, but today I will be focusing on hunger in america. Just for reference, I don’t mean the time between breakfast and lunch. I mean people who don 't know where their next meal is coming from, or are starving. I will be delving into the problems that exist, systems set up to help people do, and what an average person can do.
What does hunger mean to you? Does it mean not having that one burger that you saw on television and have been craving all week? Well, to a lot of people in America, hunger means not knowing where their next meal will come from, or thinking about how at the end of the month, the food stamps are going to run out and they won’t be able to afford the food they need. Children and teens, along with adults need to think about the people that are starving before they throw away something that could save a life.
Do you ever think about the millions of families and kids that suffer from not being able to have food? You should be very grateful if you have a family to provide food for you because not every kid does. Hunger is a term which has three meanings: •The uneasy or painful sensation caused by the want of food; craving appetite. Also, the exhausted condition caused by the want of food.
