By misinterpreting and attacking the nuanced areas of the opposition’s argument, one is able to elevate his own argument while degrading that of the opposition’s. Even when an argument is sound and logical, if it contains a single unclear phrase open to interpretation that is followed by critical mockery, it appears inconsequential and foolish to an audience. Such is the case in an exchange between Richard Seaver, the Executive Vice President of the Grove Press publishing company, and Ira Herbert, an executive of Coca-Cola, regarding their common use of the marketing slogan, “it’s the real thing”. Herbert’s argument is innately logical but poorly supported and executed.
Kingsolver heavily uses hyperbole when speaking from Rachel’s perspective and includes blame as a theme to add personality to characters throughout the book. It is easy to discern Rachel’s voice from the other sisters due to her voice and the way she processes thoughts and emotions. Rachel overexaggerates nearly everything, causing her to be rarely satisfied and constantly discontent with the world around her but never blaming herself for any misfortunes. By describing Leah as “the cause of all our problems,” (Kingsolver, 335) you can see her need to displace any blame away from herself or a predicament’s true factors and onto one set person in the same dramatic way she does anything. In Steven Salzberg, “Get Football out our Universities”, he makes the argument that football in universities are holding the United States back in the race of science. He believes if the United States eliminates football all together in universities we would focus more on what universities were originally made for, which is science and math. Throughout the argument Salzberg uses different types of rhetorical strategies to compel his audience to sway in his direction. Although, he used strong rhetorical appeals, it was hard to agree with Salzberg due to multiple logical fallacies Salzberg committed.
Well known article writer, Leonid Fridman, in his article, “America Needs Its Nerds”, describes the truthful idea that nerds and geeks, in our society, are ostracized while the kids who play sports and party are prominent. Fridman’s purpose is to impress upon the readers that nerds should not have to conform to society’s unimpressive values of what it means to be “popular”. He adopts an indignant tone in order to convey to his readers that the idea of nerds and geeks needs to fought. Fridman moves to the idea that children who would rather read and build model airplanes are the social outcasts compared to the ones who would rather play football and get wasted at parties.
In an excerpt from The Great Influenza by John M. Barry, many rhetorical devices are used to fully represent the process of a scientist. Some of the most commonly used devices are metaphors, anaphoras, and imagery, these three devices help the reader understand the main ideas of the story. The metaphors allow the reader to perceive the process of a scientist in more simplistic ideas such as science being an undiscovered wilderness. The anaphora used in the beginning of the passage emphasises that the world of science is full of uncertainty and is constantly changing, this drives the idea into the mind of the reader. The imagery is used alongside the metaphors to assist the reader in grasping the foreign ideas.
In the book Butter battle, by Dr. Seuss, there is a lot of satire that can really be understood to new readers. “The boys in my back room invented this rig”. Dr. Seuss was talking about the cold war and he used exaggeration because the characters in the book where fighting over the other way the others butter their bread. And it caused war. “With the triple sling jigger i sure felt much bigger”.
In this article, Barry uses hyperboles to get his point across. For example, when he says “the club can hit your ball 500 yards away!” , the ball probably would not be able to go 500 yards away, instead he uses this literary device to poke fun at the anti-gun party. Barry also uses sarcasm in his article, stating “we’ll need to develop a technologically advanced golf ball”, I mean that’s just ridiculous. Barry comes up with this new, revolutions golf club, just as we came up with newer, revolutionized guns where we don’t have to load a new bullet after every shot.
The use of the paradox in The Great Influenza by John M. Barry reveals seemingly contradictory statements true. In the second paragraph Barry believes that one must "embrace – uncertainty" (Barry). He uses this literacy device to highlight uncertainty as a welcomed sensation to be accepted, rather than denied. Along with presenting truthful statements, Barry makes every word, phrase, and sentence that he writes ultimately more powerful and read at different understanding levels by raising the bar and introducing contradicting information. Barry characterizes scientific research as contradicting.
The following quote "Poor Joe Starks. Bet he turns over in his grave everyday" is an example of a hyperbole. It 's an extreme exaggeration that is a readily of Janie 's actions. As the whole town watches Janie 's relationship with Tea Cake flourish the opinions are rich and at their peak. With the battle over right from wrong Janie is heavily on the wrong side.
In Clive Thompson’s essay, “Smarter Than You Think”, he argues that computers and search engines such as Google actually improve our memory and therefore our ability to analyze information. Thompson bases his theory on the concept of Transactive memory, a social system in which information is shared collectively in a group, with different people assigned key pieces of that information to remember.
