The main mental control device found in Harrison Bergeron is a “Mental Handicap” that plays loud tones at semi-regular intervals to disrupt the wearer’s train of thought and prevent the development of and major thoughts. Those who do not have these handicaps are seen as having “average” intelligence; people with “average” intelligence, such as Hazel Bergeron appear to be below the average intelligence seen in Anthem. Proof of her low intelligence, or cognitive ability, is clear seen when George Bergeron tells Hazel to “Forget sad things” with which Hazel replies “I always do”; This can be sigh of a mental disability, but due to the fact that Hazel is labeled as “average” this must mean that there are far more affected by a similar condition. The opposite is seen in Anthem if the protagonist, Equality-2521, is seen to have average intelligence.

Throughout the novel, hypnopaedia and the use of soma are shown to be the main components to the society’s lack of individual identity. Soma, a drug sponsored by the government, is used by the citizens of the World State in order to suppress any emotions which make them feel somewhat uncomfortable. The use of soma leads to a society which lacks any understanding of real emotion, an important piece to the formation of an identity. While soma by itself is destructive, the effects of hypnopaedia are comparable to a “...liquid sealing wax, drops that adhere, incrust, incorporate themselves with what they fall on, till finally the rock is one scarlet blob” (Huxley 28). Hypnopaedia is a process which is used throughout childhood to result in adults that have the exact views the World Controllers want the citizens of particular castes to have.
According to Sigmund Freud, a renowned psychoanalyst from the early 20th century, “The critical, moral superego—or conscience—developed in early childhood, monitors and censors the ego, turning external values into internalized, self-imposed rules with which to inhibit the id” (“Sigmund Freud”). In Brave New World, the members of society utilize this process in which babies are being shock conditioned to dislike things such as books and flowers, so that when they grow older they will have no desire to read and learn history or go exploring in nature (Huxley 22). Superego can be seen in this scenario because at a young age the babies experienced severe trauma and developed a bad association with flowers and books. They will then grow up with the idea that they are not supposed to be involved with things, such as flowers and books, which they have been conditioned to dislike. This is done in order to keep the babies growing up to be what the government wants them to be, based on their childhood experiences.
The 1971 film, A Clockwork Orange, consists of many psychological concepts. Two concepts in particular seem to have the biggest impact and role throughout this film. These concepts being, classical conditioning and the idea that our environment and our experiences of nurture are what shapes us.
