Hypothyroidism is a medical condition when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. This disease can occur as a congenital disease or acquired due to a primary disease of the thyroid gland. With the decrease amount of thyroid hormone, the body will have some metabolic effects and energy imbalance. Not only can hypothyroidism be a primary diagnosis but it can also be a secondary diagnosis related to other illnesses or diseases that affects the thyroid. Primary diagnosis of hypothyroidism is due to the thyroid gland directly. Some of these primary diseases are due to Iodine deficiency or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (autoimmune). Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include fatigue, weakness, constipation, depression, weight gain, enlarged thyroid gland, hair loss, irregular menstrual cycles or hyperlipidemia. It also has a high comorbidity with other diseases. Thyroid deficiencies are normally followed in patients that are diagnosed with bipolar disorders, depression, and it increases the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Not only has it been found to increase the effect of mental disorders, but if the patient does not improve with treatment then additional diseases may play a role in the unsuccessful treatment. Additional comorbidities that may effect the thyroid are; menopause, andropause, post-menopausal syndrome, and insulin resistance. Each one of these comorbidities have hormone imbalances which may make it difficult to treat
