Symbolism can convey a message effectively to reveal the theme. This is true in the poem “I am a Rock” by Paul Simon. The speaker uses symbolism to reveal the theme, which is that one may avoid personal relationships after emotional pain, in order to avoid being hurt again. To start off, the speaker isolates themselves from the rest of the world. The speaker compares him/herself to an island, because “an island never cries” (line 30). The speaker distances him/herself, just like an island to avoid further risk of any emotional pain, by shoving their feelings aside.
