The movie, “I am Legend” starring Will Smith was a dystopian movie about a virus infecting everyone except for one man-or so he thought. It used a lot of universal storytelling elements and literary devices to tie the theme “loss of humanity” to reality. It used romance and sacrificial love to foreshadow the movie. It also had a mixture of symbolism and social cohesion as parables to glue the story together.

The symbolism of the mannequin in the movie “I am Legend” helps to build the theme of loss of humanity. Immediately after the scene where the character, Robert, loses his only companion, sam, to the virus he begins to feel alone. He drives to the bookstore. He begins to talk to a mannequin who he presumes to be a lady. He says to it “I miss my friend so i'm saying hello to you today.” He speaks to the mannequins because he lived a full life in a world surrounded by millions of people to wake up one day to an emptiness and a loneliness so extensive to where that's what he was forced to turn to. In this society you're not able to be outside after sunset. You're supposed to be somewhere safe otherwise the monsters could and would infect you with the virus. Because of this social cohesion of life in this society, you need to use daylight carefully and plans things to keep safe. Robert planned as he needed. He planned an escape from home for himself just in case. Just in case the infected made it past the wall of bombs in his front yard. Just in case the infected made it past the sandbag barriers blocking the doors and the wooden barricades covering all the windows. This is almost exactly how society is in our world today. People don't plan for the unexpected they settle for what they know and plan for just
