When he became disabled due to Parkinson's, my grandfather never fully recovered. His problems were, however, lessened by his attempts with physical and occupational therapy. I will never forget the devastating consequences of this. Being the daughter of a nurse, my interest in the healthcare field began at a young age. I spent a considerable time observing her at work. I love the rewarding feeling of helping others with physical and mental disabilities. Memories of my grandfather and subsequent encounters with occupational therapy pulled my attention to this path. Lewis and Clark’s OTA program has a very high reputation and an exemplary graduation rate of 86%. I want nothing more than to be accepted into this program so I can pursue my dream career as an OTA. As an occupational therapist's assistant, I will be able to make a difference in someone’s life, such as the OTAs who helped my grandpa made a difference in his. Whether it is helping the elderly find new ways to continue to live independently or help someone successfully return to work or help adults and children with developmental disabilities, I will be helping someone regain the abilities needed for everyday life. My son was born at 24 weeks and spent three months at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. It was there I first met an OTA and knew this would be the career for me. I want to dedicate my life to helping infants and children in this medical setting. I want to help mothers and their infants in the way that my infant and I were helped.
