The Occupational Therapy profession is advocating for clients and profession itself in different ways to guarantee the access to the services. The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process defines advocacy as “efforts directed toward promoting occupational justice and empowering clients to seek and obtain resources to fully participate in daily life occupations. The outcomes of advocacy and self-advocacy support health, well-being, and occupational participation at the individual or systems level”(AOTA, 2014). The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) are been advocating in the US legislature and they have multiple tools and information for professionals to advocate for our clients and profession. . Another problem during the accreditation of Ayres work is she decided to use sensory integration as an isolated anomaly, rather than embedding it entirely in the context of Occupational therapy. Ayres main goals of her work was more based on what Occupational Therapy alone, can achieve, such as individuals can follow routines that are involved in daily life like, eating, sleeping getting ready, etc. Reseatchers trying to replicate the treatment developed a goal attainment scale, to help measure the effectiveness of studies. This was a breakthrough, allowing goals for the families and individuals and comparison across the wide array of people using this method.

Abbie Rodgers Civitan Camp is a volunteer summer camp for Adults with Disabilities. I volunteered for two summers from 2007-2008. During my volunteer efforts, my duties were to assist our campers with maintaining their hygiene, assist with meals, and activity schedules. Each year I observed Occupational Therapy Assistant students that would attend and assist volunteers with camper’s daily activities. I knew, after observing the students, that Occupational Therapy would be a career that would fulfill my calling to serve others.
History of Service: Jared has been receiving occupational therapy for many years to support his sensory needs and facilitate his participation in his academic setting. Progress toward previous OT goal: Jared made good progress and met his goals until last school year. His classroom teacher, 1:1 aid, and OT tried various strategies to help him attend to learning. However, he did not respond to any identified intervention. Jared did not make progress for the past school year.
Description On the 10th of April 2017 at 10am I, a first year Occupational Therapy student interviewed a participant about her favourite leisure activity which was touch rugby in a semi-formal setting for 10 minutes which took place at City College. The main reason why this interview took place was to help me reflect on my communication skills and to make goals to improve my skills. Due to the participants confidentiality I have made sure that I have used a different name throughout this assignment, the name in which I am going to use is Jane.
I have always wanted to work in healthcare as I feel it is important to help others and provide a service that can have a significant impact on someone’s life. Occupational Therapy provides me the opportunity to have an impact on people’s lives because of the way that they can work with their clients. Unlike most professions in the healthcare field, OTs work together with the client rather than strictly telling them what to do during their treatment. This is important as it helps build a connection between the OT and the client and helps the client feel more empowered in the treatment process. Another reason why Occupational Therapy is a field that I want to pursue is the many areas of practice and opportunities to work with people of different
I am an Occupational Therapy Assistant Student from Community College of Baltimore County. I am a second year student preparing for my level II fieldwork. Upon completion, I will be eligible to enter the workforce. Based on the previous experiences I have had at Mental Health fieldwork, it is evidenced that Occupational Therapy Practitioners are needed in Mental Health settings. Occupational therapy practitioners encourage individual at mental health setting to live a healthy lifestyle such as preparing healthy meals, exercises, drinking water, and taking good care of themselves.
and intrigued by the mind-body connection as well as the importance of human activity and occupation in maintaining mental and physical well-being. At the same time, my desire to work directly with people and be able to make a positive and lasting change to their lives by empowering them and helping discover their strengths and confidence in themselves to achieve their goals, led me to a realization that a career in occupational therapy would be a perfect fit for me. To me occupational therapy is a dynamic, rewarding, challenging, and inspiring field where I can fully realize my skills and knowledge. Having always been a firm believer in the patient-centric approach, I am passionate about providing excellent service to patients by improving their performance, preventing illness and disability and promoting adaptation to life
Occupational therapy saved my family. Growing up with a sister with severe spastic cerebral palsy to include both cognitive and functional deficits, life existed on a day to day, hour by hour basis, as we were unsure of challenges each moment would bring. This all changed the moment occupational therapy brought quality of life back to me and my family. My very personal experience defined my purpose to become an occupational therapist, to pay the gift given my family forward.
Becoming an occupational therapist is my passion and my long-term career goal. Since a young age I have been incredibly inspired and motivated to befriend and help disabled individuals. Having grown up with a disabled mother who benefited from the services of occupational therapy I had the opportunity to see first hand how the experience gave can give individuals like her fulfilling and productive lives. With both parents working as healthcare professionals, including my mother who is now an occupational therapist herself, I see every day how rewarding the field is. Through my life I have had unique personal, professional and educational experiences that have shaped me into a strong candidate for an advanced education in occupational therapy.
As I was sitting in my P212 class we were told about one of our new assignments called the Career Action Plan(CAP), my first reaction was “oh my gosh it is my first year of college and I honestly already don’t want to be in the major I am now so how am I supposed to make a CAP”, but my second reaction had me excited. I have always enjoyed the Health care field and helping others, but it wasn’t until I found my passion in my heart to be able to understand what all steps I should take to become a successful college student first then an Occupational therapist in the finished product. As most of my professors have said getting s head start will be the key to success, now that is not to say if you don’t do this you won’t succeed because you
I have always had the intense desire to care and look after people from a very young age. I firmly believe that everyone deserves the best quality of life possible and this is what had drawn me to occupational therapy as a career path in the first place. It is so easy to take for granted all the everyday tasks we can do and we seldom consider the effect of not being able to complete them. As an occupational therapist I would be able to make a positive impact on someone’s life and make it possible for them to enjoy their life. I want the opportunity to provide support to people, help them gain independence and watch them grow more confident in their own ability.
Volunteering at McKenna Farms Therapy Services I was able to observe pediatric occupational therapy sessions. Not only did I get to observe Occupational Therapy sessions, but I observed Hippotherapy sessions too. What I found so unique about McKenna Farms is that they had Speech Therapist, Physical Therapist, and Occupational Therapist all together at one clinic. This allowed me to witness how the different types of therapy fit together and how the therapist would collaborate to find the best way to treat the children. My favorite part was finding ways to communicate with the kids.
There are several opportunities to become involved in the field of healthcare. It took some thinking and reflecting on what I wanted to achieve in healthcare to conclude what careers I wanted. Before I knew it, I came up with my top career option, physical therapy. I knew that I wanted to continue my knowledge about the human body and its functions. This led me to choose a career in healthcare.
