The first time I recognized my passion for sustainable development was when my father and I took a trip to the San Diego waste landfill in Miramar. As a garbage truck driver, my father wanted to expose me to the waste industry at a young age. Since he never had the opportunity to finish grade school, the only way he could mentor me was by teaching me the process in which we dispose trash. Therefore, despite his broken English and limited understanding on sustainability, taking me to visit the landfill fused my passion for the environment.
In addition to my father’s influence, growing up in a low income community in San Diego has also left a strong impact on my environmental perspective. As a Barrio Logan native I have personally experience the lack of accessible and affordable environmental resources. Therefore, my goal is to obtain a career within the federal government and advocate for the implementation of policies that will provide low income communities with access to cleaner and renewable resources.

At SDSU I am liaison of two University Senate committees, Sustainability and Environment and Safety. With both committees I have built and developed relationships with students and university administration in order to create strategic plans, execute policies and establish environmental expectations for the campus. As a committee member, I insure a student prospective is incorporated into building development, project implementations and policy decisions. Therefore, by being activity engaged within campus sustainability and implementing environmental guidelines, I will be able to further develop my perspective on environmental policies in my
