One of the major characters in the story of Othello is Iago, Iago whose name means supplanter in another language is a man or a human example of evil (Pigg, Daniel). Iago is the type of being that plays on the insecurities of people or characters of this excellent story. He can be considered a person that one may fear in life because he knows what buttons to push to cause a reaction (Pigg, Daniel). Iago is an evil, devious, jealous, and manipulative human being or may even be considered a personification of evil (Pigg, Daniel). Iago is ultimately the culprit for all of the tragedy that is bound to come in this tragic story of Othello. In the story Iago is jealous of Othello, an African who has high social class, one who is well-respected, and …show more content…
He sees an interaction between Desdemona and Michael Cassio which is innocent. He formulates in his mind that the interaction that Desdemona and Michael Cassio are having is all but innocent. You would have to be a sick and twisted individual to convince yourself of something other than what you see. While watching Desdemona and Michael Cassio interact he says, He takes her by the palm, ay, well said whisper; with as little web as this will I enslave as great a fly as Cassio; Ay, smile upon her, do; I will give thee in thine own courtship. We live around these types of people everyday, they run our cities, states, countries, businesses, and so forth. We work with people such as Iago, have relationships, and even have people in our families that have the same characteristics as Iago. Iago is the purest form of evil that you can imagine. I commend him on his tactics because nobody can possibly come close to causing that much chaos without having their plan become unraveled. When Shakespeare wrote this story, I wonder if he was telling this story through some experience that encountered with other people? Are people in the world today really that evil just as Iago was portrayed in this story? He manipulates Roderigo into selling his land, causes Othello to kill his innocent wife, causes Othello to commit suicide, and if that is not enough he kills his own wife in the story because she figures out the truth about his plot against Othello and exposes him. Is he considered to be non-human or simply the devil? Othello stabs him in the stomach that should surely kill him but he does not die; that should open up some questions in people’s minds about who he is. This story should teach us all of who we can trust and who we cannot trust. I am sure that people who have been victims of money schemes and other crimes concerning trust can attest to
