The demons specifically point out using distractions as a strategy against teenagers. A distraction is anything that prevents someone from giving their full attention to something else. This can include any object, human, or thing that hinders your concentration. Thus, Ishbane uses this to distract Ian from the Gospel in the beginning of the book. Ian is completely absorbed with witchcraft and new age theories, that he does not even think about Jesus. The demons use this often in my life. My main distraction in my life is technology. For example, I will be sitting at the desk and then I will hear my phone start ringing or I will see a new update on my computer and feel the urge to go and check it.
