Before I can confidently teach numeracy to my learners, I have to make sure that I have prepared myself and I fully understand the numbers and I can explain some of the key concept in numeracy before teaching them how to apply them. Once one understand these concepts, it will be easier for me to explain them to my learners and I will be able to apply a variety of methods of application. Because as the English proverb says. “There are many ways to skin a cat”. This practically means a problem generally has more than one solution. I will also teach them that we shouldn’t be afraid of working with numbers because we do numeracy in different ways everyday: both formally and non-formally. Firstly, I will put a definition of addition in simple words. For example, I will just tell them that that addition is basically just putting things together, combining two or more things. Then I will explain using numerical concepts such as: “what is the sum of 2+2?” ”What is the total of all your animals together”? And “what is the total of your profit?” All these questions want an answer which is the sum. “Sum” is the answer you get after adding two or more thigs together. I will have to use examples such as “how many cows do you have all in all together including the calves? And also use this one “after a busy day at the supermarket, how much did you make if you have 20 R2 coins, 15 R5 coins, 10 R10 notes, 8 R50 notes, 5 R100 notes and 3 R200 notes’. I can make it easy for them by illustrating using those mentioned amounts drawn on small papers so they can see what they are working with. I will also show them that we use money and addition when we calculate how much we will give our children for pocket money for the whole week or
