Identity Change In Australia

114 Words1 Pages
To be Australian, what is Australian? The Australian identity has changed over the years. From colonisation, to globalisation, from diversity to Superdiversity, Australia has seen its identity change significantly. Van Krieken describes identity as “the constellation of characteristics, such as values and beliefs, which people regard as part of their self but that are derived from social forces.” (Van Krieken, et al. 2014, 478). Australian values have changed from one which was based on the colour of skin, to one of content of character. However, this change has been met with rebellion from certain groups. Fuelled by fear from the media, these groups wish to see the Australia identity revert that to colonial times.
